Are you sure the physical CD drive can read burned discs properly? Copying a mixed mode CD is not difficult, nearly any burning software should be able to do it.

It is almost certainly the belt either worn loose or stuck in the "default" shape that it's been sitting in for so long and not wanting to rotate. Some people report boiling the belt in water helps tighten it up. I usually just take them off, roll them between my fingers a bit and put it back on …

If you wanted to do that sort of stuff you'd probably be after a PCI modem. All the ISA modems I've seen only expose themselves as bog standard serial ports.

What are you using for a compiler? An ordinary pointer probably won't work with lds/les, it will need to be a far pointer.

Stop using other machines to partition and format the cards. You need to do it all on the target machine - use auto-detect in the BIOS, boot with a floppy and use fdisk to remove whatever partitions are there and create a new one. Then format it with the /S option to make it bootable.

The DS1287 has its own internal battery (and crystal) so the CR2032 won't be doing anything. The symptom of the RTC losing all its settings except for the calender (date/time) would indicate the rclr pin (21) isn't being held high when the RTC is powered.
